The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a major honors show draws close, you'll find a clamor to include of new categories to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers with niche passions.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case supporting my request is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition for anything that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles globally and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
